One of your first challenges will be “to make the unfamiliar familiar”—learning to navigate through the maze of policies and procedures related to your employment; acquainting yourself with the mission, organizational structure and culture of the institution; and building a peer network.

We would like to help you with this transition. To this end, we have collected, developed and compiled resources on a wide range of topics—from union membership and recontracting to tuition reimbursement and campus events—to create this Orientation Manual. We hope it will be a useful resource!

Rowan University evolved from humble beginnings in 1923 as a normal school, with a mission to train teachers for South Jersey classrooms, to a comprehensive university with a strong regional reputation.

The American Federation of Teachers is the union that represents the Faculty, Professional Staff, Librarians and Coaches of Rowan University. The Federation of Rowan College Educators (F.O.R.C.E.) Local 2373 is the local chapter of this organization. It is the legal agent responsible for negotiating on behalf of its members.

Founded in 1968, the University Senate is a deliberative body designed to promote dialogue among students, faculty and professional staff, and administration. The Senate proposes, modifies and reviews academic policies and also oversees the administration of personnel policies negotiated by the AFT. Their goal is to work together with other campus constituencies through shared governance to promote the well-being of the University.

Each professional staff member, librarian, and coach is required to undergo recontracting reviews. This process is a critical element for your on-going employment at the institution.

Resources are available to support the on-going development of Professional staff and Librarians.

There are opportunities for librarians and professional staff to receive promotions.

Working at a University provides a wealth of opportunity to further your education. You can pursue an undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degree; and attend various workshops sponsored by Information Resources, Human Resources or other groups on campus. In addition, the new College of Professional and Continuing Education will soon be offering a variety of continuing education courses and certificates.
