Increase Workload for Adjunct Faculty at Kean
After many years of negotiations, the Kean Administration this summer, through their Vice President for Finance and Administration, Mr. Phil Connelly, indicated that Dr. Farahi (Kean University President), agreed to permit qualified Adjunct Faculty to increase their normal workload from two (2) courses, to that of three (3) - courses, or, (9 credits). Dr. Lender the Vice President for Academic Affairs indicated to the union that every effort will be made to make these assignments of third courses based on seniority, academic credentials and/or expertise where possible. Kean College Dean's were recently notified by the Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Mark Lender, at the beginning of August, and, the Dean's are slowly conveying this information to the University Chairpersons as they return from summer break. The increased credit load does not in any way conflict with the Full/Part Time Resident Faculty Contract, or our own contract, and should reduce the 100-150 Adjunct Faculty turnover experienced every semester at Kean. Both the Union and Management see this as a win-win for all sides. Those desiring to teach another course can do so thus saving them a trip to another State College to teach, and the chairs, Deans and HR Department do not haveto recruit, interview, and process 300 adjuncts each year.
